Question:
What is the Islamic ruling on aqiqah? Is it a sunnah or wajib, or mere culture? What is its significance?

Answer:

The Aqiqah is a highly stressed Sunnah (Sunnah Mu'akkadah) for he who can afford it. The Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam said, "Spill blood (i.e. slaughter) on behalf of the newborn child" (Bukhari) The Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam also said,"Whoever wishes to slaughter on belhalf of his child shoild do so" (Abu Dawud, Nasa'i, Ahmed. Declared Sound by Al-Albani)
