Question:

Asalam Walaykum Does Islam allow slavery? If so why? And who are considered slaves(ie race, prisoner of war, felon)?

Answer:

Walaikum Assalam, slavery is discouraged in Islam. That's why in many Ayat in the Quran the expiation of a sin is freeing a slave. Freeing the slaves is one of the best deeds to please Allah Subhanahu Wata'la and that's why marrying a slave woman by a free man is restricted and prohibited unless the person is unable to marry a free woman and he's afraid of sinning.

Slavery in Islam is a deficiency caused by disbelief. That's how some scholars defined it. So it is not pertaining to race. It's also not because of a sin or even disbelief (Thus not every disbeliever is a slave) but rather it happens only when someone fights muslims and he is captured and he refused to accept Islam. Then he becomes a slave.
