| What is sunnah? |
Question: What is considered "sunnah"? Is it what the Prophet(SAW) did or is it what He(SAW) said, or is it both what he said and what He(SAW) did?: Answer: Sunnah has various definitions depending on the knowledge that you are referring to. For scholars of Jurisprudence it is what was said, done or reported by the Prophet Sallallahualiahi Wasallam. To scholars of Hadith it is what was reported from the Prophet Sallallahualaihi Wasallam be it a saying, an action, an approval or a description. So in Fiqh it's what generates a ruling while in hadith any report mentioning the Prophet Sallallahualiahi Wasallam. So both sayings and actions by the prophet sallallahualaihi wasallam are sunnah but the saying takes precedence over the action.
