Question:

So today at the religion center a sect from the Hindu religion sponsored the food for the free lunch. And man was it good. Some really nice Daal, Halwa, and salad. After eating, my friend and I brought over our Dr. Zakir Naik questions to one of them. Mind you they are all white. You've probably seen them chanting "hari krishna" on campus if you go to UH. I asked them what they're form of worship was and he replied chanting anything they want to get close to ie krishna, raam, and even objects. He also said Eating. Now here is where the issue comes up. They don't eat meat but he said that part of their worship is cooking the food with certain love and care, and praying to it, and asking the gods to bless it. At that instant I thought of sticking my finger down my throat and throwing up all over the guy but then I thought "it's not meat". But then again there is shirk involved.

Answer:

The food of the hindus is of two types:

(i) Food that is cooked and then offered to their idols. It is normally sweet. When cooked with rice and milk it is known as charhawa and is usually moist. A dry form cooked with ghee, honey and flour is known as prasad. It is not permissible to eat this as it is similar to food that has been slaughtered for other than Allah.

(ii) Food that is cooked for general everyday use and eating. It is permissible to eat this. Even if prayers of blessing are made on this food then their is no harm in eating it as it hasn't been cooked as an offering to the idols
